Frequently Asked Questions
Why does it cost to recycle a TV or monitor?
- CRT televisions and monitors contain leaded glass, cadmium, phosphorous, and other harmful materials.
- LCD (flat screen) TVs and monitors contain mercury.
- Unlike other recyclable items, TVs and Monitors need to be carefully taken apart to separate the different components like glass, plastics, and circuitry, which requires specialized labor and equipment.
- While some valuable metals can be recovered from TVs and Monitors, the amount is often not enough to cover the entire recycling cost, especially for older models.
- Recycling facilities must adhere to strict environmental regulations, adding to the expense of properly disposing of electronic waste.
